“I was giddy with excitement walking from the road along the path through the meadow and following a pretty stream towards Gordale Scar, seeing the rocks in the distance. But nothing can prepare you for the scale of the place as you walk round the ‘corner’ and see the huge rock face, massive boulders and the relatively little waterfall at the neck of the scar.
This is a big painting from an unusual angle. I wanted to depict the feeling of the overhang from the impressive rock face that felt dark and brooding in the shadows but which had an interesting depth of colour. Initially I thought about painting in a figure to help give some scale to the view but it seemed to detract too much from the real star of the show!”
