Huddersfield Art Society

I am an active member of Huddersfield Art Society, being on their leadership council with a role as the Saturday Programme Secretary. This involves planning, co-ordinating and managing this fortnightly programme aiming to get a range of demonstrations, talks, and workshops together to cover a membership from very experienced artists to early beginners.

More recently I have set up an Abstract Group meeting monthly to explore the abstract genre, and to encourage each other by sharing ideas and techniques.

Creating together

Encouraging each other

Learning from each other

It is a great opportunity to network both with the members in the society as well as other artists within a wide area. I love seeing other people’s work and hearing about their approach to art, their inspiration and techniques. It is always really inspiring and encouraging and it is great to see people getting really enthused by something new to try or by having their work appreciated by a wider audience.

Whilst I am not trained as a teacher I love to share techniques or lead workshops in exploring different media as I think there is so much we can encourage each other with, to get conversations going and spark off new ideas for people to explore.

As well as the structured programme we have a weekly portrait group and weekly life drawing group, regular outdoor painting days in the late spring and summer months, gallery visits a few times each year, social events and regular challenges across the membership such as the portrait swap (where members are linked in pairs to do each other’s portraits) and other themed challenges.

We have an annual exhibition of member’s work and it is great to see the wide range of subjects and approach, and at a really high standard.

We use social media such as instagram and facebook to keep members informed about groups and to promote the work the society does, and we used our You Tube channel, particularly during lockdown, to continue to provide inspiration to our members when we couldn’t meet in person.
