“Parking on the A62 Manchester Road we climbed to the top of Pule Hill to explore the quarry, the summit and the view. And what a view! The moors were a range of gorgeous orange and rust of early autumn, and with a wide horizon, the hills showed off a vast range of shape and texture hinting at their history. Even from a distance the cutting itself looks pretty spectacular. It would be a lovely spot to return to do some en plein air painting but this day, although it was sunny and bright, the air was ‘fresh’ – ideal for walking and scrambling but not for standing about too long!”
